Abseiler rescued from toxic mine

Otago fire crews wearing breathing apparatus managed to rescue an
abseiler who was overcome by toxic fumes in a former mine shaft in
Kaitangata, 6 miles south of Balclutha, 2 others in the party managed
to raise the alarm.
The "black air" atmosphere of the shaft, last worked 35 years ago, may
have featured pockets of methane gas.
