How to Classify a Confined Space
The workplace definition of a confined space can be unclear and confusing. To make this even more difficult, confined space definitions vary between countries and states. A confined space is not just an area where it is difficult to move.
When you classify confined spaces on a work site, maybe to develop a Confined Space Register, you should aim to be:
Consistent and realistic
Practical (consult employees)
Knowledgeable (confined space trained)
Before spending time debating the classification, identify the potential hazards and decide on realistic controls for the space. Then compare the controls you have selected to the requirements of the confined space regulations... they may be the same! You must provide a safe place of work and have safe work procedure, no matter how you classify a space. If a space is classed Confined Space some safety control measures will become compulsory, such as gas testing, entry permits and a safety standby person.
Some worksites use the term "Restrictive Space" to describe an area that may become a confined space under certain conditions. Make you have have clear instructions on the types of work or conditions, such as welding, that will cause a Restrictive Space to become a Confined Space.
If confined space planning and preparation seems time consuming or too hard, maybe your site procedures need streamlining. KEEP IT SIMPLE.
